Only 22 days until 2012!

It seems like we blinked and November disappeared! Luckily we fit in three workshops, the AEV Conference, and several product presentations! Photos from these events can be viewed on our Facebook page!

Now we are already 9 days into December! Have you started your holiday shopping? If not, be sure to stop into our Customer Service Centre and pick up some goodies for artists of all ages!

Just a reminder we will be CLOSED from December 22nd at 1pm and REOPENING January 9th 2012! The Customer Service Centre will be closing at 5pm on Thursday January 12th and 19th.
The annual DATTA Conference was held Wednesday and Thursday of this week at Ashwood College. Thanks for the opportunity to exhibit and run a workshop again this year. We enjoyed speaking with all the teachers who attended and were VERY impressed with the number of "non-drawers" who attended Tania's Copic Marker workshop and created numerous masterpieces! No need to fret if you missed out on this workshop - Tania is available to visit your school and run staff or student sessions. She will also be running a workshop here at Zart in Term 1. Please contact us for further information 9890 1867.

Last night the 2012 Term 1 Gallery was officially opened by  Rebecca Holmes from Mullauna College (pictured right).  We had a great turn out and appreciate your support at this busy time of year! If you couldn't make it you've got plenty of time to visit the space as it will be up until March!

Wishing you a happy and safe festive season from all of us at Zart. We are looking forward to seeing you in the new year!
We also had the chance to catch up with Kate Thornburn of Camberwell Grammar and present her with her "lucky 100th Facebook fan" book prize! Fiona Astridge was our 125th Fan and has also received a book. Stay tuned to Facebook for more random loyalty giveaways and rewards programs still to come in 2012!

From Doodle to Design

Did you know that student that doodled rather than day dreamed remembered 29% more than daydreamers?

"Doodling can aid a person's memory, by expanding just enough energy to keep one from day dreaming" (Andrade, J. (2010), What does doodling do?. Applied Cognitive Psychology, 24: 100–106. doi: 10.1002/acp.1561)

Could doodling be the key to keeping your students engaged?

Check out some of our workshop participants creations below and follow the link to our Facebook gallery to see the full album!

Story Forest at the Fitzroy Library

Fleur McArthur recently sent us these images of a project she coordinated with the Fitzroy Library as part of the Term 3 school holiday program.

Through consultation with staff , she devised a "Story Forest" to be created within the library. As the community is very culturally diverse, the symbol of a tree became universal. When creating the forest, staff, children and adults were encouraged to draw, collage, write or illustrate their favourite story, create a new one or simply explore colour and line.

The result was the creation of 18 uniquely themed one metre high. The "Story Forest" has truly come to life within the library, in a vibrant and colourful Artwork.

The trees are currently on permanent display within the library, and were created using Zart Art products.
Thanks for the images Fleur!

Foliage Frenzy from St Margaret's Anglican Girls School

We were very excited to receive these images from Kerry Rider who teaches at St Margaret's Anglican Girls School in Ascot Queensland! Her Year 6 students used the Zart Art papier mache masks as a base for their Foliage Frenzy creations! The modifications made by each student have greatly transformed the masks into unique disguises used in a production. Can you guess which mask they started with? Kerry has informed us that they will be used in a special presentation in Term 2 next year. However we will be lucky enough to feature them in the Term 3 Gallery! We are looking forward to having these incredible pieces and to seeing  Kerry again at our workshops next year! Thanks for sending us your images! It's always exciting to receive artwork from our out of state customers!

October Wrap Up and November Preview

October was a busy month for Zart Art! We started off with our clearance sale during the first week and had our consultants running the 2011 Celebrations workshops all around Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales during the rest of the month. Last week Zart Art and the CBCA held an Authors and Illustrators talk focused on families. Our presenters, Mitch Vane, Anna Walker, Lucia Masciullo and Stephen Michael King gave us very personal insights in to how family plays an important role in their text and illustrations. Thank you to everyone who attended the workshops and clearance sale! There are still more bargains available in our retail centre, but be quick before they are all gone!

If your budget is closing early and you are still undecided how to spend it, Zart can offer you a "Manual Goods Credit" - where your school is billed for a nominated sum and then you have 12 months in which to spend it as you wish.
While all of these wonderful events have been happening our teams have been working behind the scenes to prepare the new 2012 catalogue! Your school should be receiving one soon so keep checking your letter box. The catalogue will now only list one price for goods (excluding GST). The term schedule of workshops has also been included to help you plan for next year.

Just a reminder we have two more workshops to be held in November, the Early Childhood/Years Christmas on the 10th and Doodle to Design on the 23rd!

We are looking forward to the AEV conference on November 11th and 12th and hope to see you there!

November 29th is the last day to visit the Term 4 Gallery as it will be swapped over to the Term 1 display the next day. The opening will be held on Thursday the 8th of December from 4:30pm – 5:30pm.

Keep checking back for the latest updates and “Like” us on Facebook to stay informed of sales, photos, news, events and workshop opportunities!

Dreaming with Open Eyes

I attended the opening of Pamela Irving's Dreaming with Open Eyes exhibition at The Light Factory in Eltham and was blown out by the breadth of her talent. The big bold bright colours of her paintings can't help but bring a smile to your face. The quirky titles will make you giggle, so if your day needs brightening up I can highly recommend this exhibition.
I also found this article in The Age that you might be interested in:

Indigenous Art Forum

Sixty teachers joined in a lively discussion at Zart Art last night. Maybe no concrete answers but a clear message that as teachers we need to research the topic of Indigenous Art before launching into any practical art activities. Thanks must go to Marg Stephens, Ellen Jose, Jane Byrne, Darryl Smith and Max Darby for initiating discussion and sharing with us their insight into teaching and understanding Indigenous Australian culture through the visual arts. The number of teachers attending this forum, in the middle of report writing was testament to the interest this topic holds. We hope this blog will be a venue for continued discussion and sharing of information and links in the future. If you were at the forum or if you would like to share any great links or resources on this topic please do so. I will update this blog with some of the links and organisations mentioned last night.

Pinwheels for Peace 2011
